Pak Lah: BN capable of significant win in 13th GE

KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional (BN) is capable of a significant victory in the 13th general election in comparison to the previous one in 2008, according to former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

He stressed however that the efforts and hard work by BN leaders in their service to the population must be continuous.

"It is important that the winnable candidate is highly dedicated in serving the people," he told reporters here today after opening the national seminar on achievements of post-merdeka Muslims.

Also present at the function attended by more than 200 participants was Malaysian Institute of Islamic Understanding (Ikim) director-general Datuk Nik Mustapha Nik Hassan.

On opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's challenge to prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for a debate, Abdullah said it "was not something that decides the election".

"A debate doesn't solve problems. What is more important is that the government is able to contribute to the people through implementation of programmes," he said. -- BERNAMA

Shift in people’s support gives BN confidence to clinch more seats

 BALIK PULAU: AFTER being on the receiving end for almost three years, Barisan Nasional  has hit back at Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin declaring  the coalition was set to redeem itself in Penang.

The deputy prime minister said BN leaders would work harder to recapture more seats in Penang as there was an evident shift in the people's support for the coalition.

He said BN had also outlined various strategies to  win more seats and identified several constituencies that it stood a good chance of winning.

"There are constituencies where we lost by a small margin. The new wave of support for us can help us win these seats," he said after a meet-the-people luncheon in Kampung Permatang Tepi yesterday.

Present were his wife, Puan Seri Noorainee Abdul Rahman, and state BN leaders.

(In the last general election, BN only won 11 out of the 40 state seats, with Umno being the sole party represented in the state assembly. Gerakan and MCA lost in all the state seats  contested).

Muhyiddin also had some  words for Lim, who has been going around claiming all the credit for the development  in Penang.

He said Lim had only been the chief minister  for three years, but he had become a very arrogant and aloof leader.

Muhyiddin said Lim refused to acknowledge what the previous BN-led administration had done to develop the island state.

"This is not only coming from BN supporters, but the people in general. Lim Guan Eng thinks he is smarter than everyone else.

"He goes around saying Penang has developed like magic in just three years all because of him.

"He just refuses to acknowledge what the previous administration under Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon has done. But Penang people are not blind or don't know what the actual situation is."

Asked on Lim's style of constantly threatening to sue those who questioned him, Muhyiddin said: "That is just it... it just shows how aloof and arrogant he is. This is not what I am saying. It is from the people. It is okay if he is angry with me (for saying this).

"This is what Penangites are telling me. This is how Guan Eng 'rules'. He does not govern or manage the state, but 'rules' it."

Earlier, the BN deputy chairman and Umno deputy president held three closed-door meetings  with state Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman,  the Penang Umno liason committee and state BN leaders.

Meanwhile, Bernama reports that Muhyiddin said  teachers  would not get automatic promotions, but  must also undergo interviews and other relevant processes.

Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said the method of promotion for teachers would be finalised after meetings between the government and the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services were concluded.

Parti Kita Terima Surat Tunjuk Sebab

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita), yang ditubuhkan lebih setahun lalu, kini menghadapi risiko kemungkinan pendaftarannya dibatalkan oleh Pendaftar Pertubuhan (ROS).

Setiausaha parti Kita, Masrum Dayat berkata ini kerana parti itu telah menerima surat tunjuk sebab bertarikh 9 Februari daripada ROS yang meminta mereka mnejelaskan mengapa pendaftaran parti tidak patut dibatalkan.

"Surat ditandatangani Timbalan Pendaftar meminta kita menjawab beberapa perkara berkaitan dengan pentadbiran parti...tak silap, lima perkara semuanya, sebelum 9 Mac ini. Kita sedang dalam proses menyediakan jawapan terbabit," katanya ketika dihubungi Bernama.

Beliau tidak menjelaskan aspek pentadbiran itu tetapi sumber parti memberitahu antara perkara yang dibangkitkan ROS adalah pelanggaran perlembagaan parti dalam urusan pelantikan beberapa ahli ke jawatan tertentu yang dikatakan tidak dibuat melalui Jawatankuasa Eksekutif Pusat (Jep).

Selain itu, parti itu diminta membuat penjelasan mengenai pelanggaran perkara 12.3.4 Undang-undang Berdaftar Persatuan kerana minit mesyuarat Jep bertarikh 29 Jun lalu dikatakan tidak disediakan oleh setiausaha parti.

Masrum berkata sebelum in pegawai ROS ada berjumpa dengan beliau sebagai sebahagian daripada proses siasatan yang dijalankan setelah pihak pendaftar menerima aduan terhadap parti itu.

"Kita sudah berikan penjelasan. Perkara yang dibangkitkan banyak mengenai aspek pentadbiran parti. Mereka tidak menjelaskan siapa yang membuat aduan, cuma memberitahu pihaknya telah terima aduan.

"Setelah semua kenyataan diberikan, saya merasa terkejut bila dapat surat tunjuk sebab daripada ROS minggu lalu. Bagaimanapun, kita akan menjawabnya sebelum 9 Mac ini," katanya.

Dalam pada itu, Masrum turut memaklumkan mesyuarat Jep pada 18 Feb lalu telah menolak cadangan presiden KITA Datuk Zaid Ibrahim untuk membubarkan parti.

Sebaliknya, Jep memutuskan Zaid perlu menerajui parti itu.

"Sehubungan itu, Mesyuarat Perwakilan Tahunan Parti pada 25 Februari ini kita tangguhkan sehingga April. Itu jika KITA tak dibatalkan pendaftarannya," katanya.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is on a one-day visit to Penang

Muhyiddin and his wife, Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman, flew in to the Penang international airport at 8.25 am and were greeted by Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Tasek Gelugor MP and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop and other state BN leaders.

 The deputy prime minister is scheduled to attend three closed-door meetings, with Penang Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman, the State Umno Liaison Committee, and State BN leaders.

Muhyiddin and Norainee are scheduled to attend a 1Malaysia lunch with the people in Kampung Permatang Tepi, Simpang Empat, Balik Pulau, near here.

The deputy prime minister is also scheduled to launch a programme on the enhancement of the professionalism of educators in Penang at Universiti Sains

Malaysia (USM) here.

Meanwhile, Noorainee is scheduled to attend two separate events, one of which is a breakfast meeting with leaders of Puspanita and the Penang Women's

Institute at Anjung Indah, Balik Pulau, and the other, a meeting with the fishermen women's growth centre in Kampung Pulau Betong, Balik Pulau.

Muhyiddin and Norainee are scheduled to return to Kuala Lumpur in the evening. - Bernama
